ODICCASIONS (2009)

Odiccasions is a sound performance utilizing a 20-channel speaker array and light frequency sonification. This work is a synthesis of my pieces Occasions and Odization.
20 speakers (5-inch woofers mounted in wood boxes) are distributed around the gallery space on the floor, facing up. As in Occasions, a similar score is used detailing frequency movements of twelve glissandi each assigned a unique speaker. The remaining eight speakers project sound from a version of the Odization program receiving light frequency data from three phototransistors and a video camera. Light is generated from flame sources (candles, lighters, matches), small LCD screens (such as cell phones), remote controls (infrared pulse codes), and potential contributions from the space (reflections, ambience) and audience (camera flashes, etc.). Light within range of the sensors is sonified via the Odization program, and the variation of this light is the primary instrumentation for the performer.
